Cycling in Lae

Lae City Authority partners with the Lae Cycling Association to boost cycling and youth development in Lae and beyond.

Memorandum of Understanding (April 2026)

On Saturday 14 April 2026, the Lae Cycling Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Lae City Authority — a major step toward expanding cycling across the region. The agreement aims to strengthen community safety, create pathways for youth employment, and build a more sustainable cycling culture in Lae and beyond.

The signing was officiated by:

  • Mr. Robin Calistus, Chief Executive Officer, Lae City Authority
  • Mr. John Byrne, Chairman of the Rosso Cup Mountain Bike Race and President of Lae Chamber of Commerce
  • Mr. Maine Winny, LCA Tourism Manager
  • Mr. Ricky Bimbi, President of Lae Cycling Association

Officials described the partnership as a milestone for cycling sports development and youth engagement in Morobe Province.

A growing sporting community

The Lae Cycling Association represents a network of 16 affiliated clubs across Lae, Huon Gulf and surrounding areas. Members range from children and youths through to adults, making it one of the most inclusive sporting groups in the region. Its reach extends across both urban and rural communities, bringing people together through sport.

Vision for the future

The Association's long-term vision goes beyond hosting races. Leaders are working toward the formation of a formal Cycling Federation for Morobe Province, which would provide structure, standards and recognition for cyclists at all levels. The group also plans to host more regular cycling events throughout the year.
