From Monday 27 May 2024, all Lae Main Market operations move to the temporary Lae Main Market on Markham Road. The existing market — including the bus stop — will close so construction of the new market can begin.
LCA advises the general public in Lae, Morobe Province, the Highlands and the rest of the Momase region that all market operations will shift to the temporary Lae Main Market along Markham Road, Lae, Morobe Province on Monday, 27 May 2024.
Once the move is complete, the main market — including its current bus stop — will close to allow construction of the new market facility. The new market is funded by the Government of Australia, the Government of New Zealand, and the Lae City Authority.
All PMV services currently at the main market will move to the temporary market bus stop next to the new site. LCA has held briefings with PMV operators and they are aware of the change. Temporary drop-off and pick-up points are signposted on billboards at:
To prevent the congestion that has been a daily occurrence around the existing market, concrete bollards are being installed on Markham Road to enforce one-way traffic flow. Drivers and pedestrians should take care in this area.
Street vending around the perimeter of the existing main market will not be permitted at the temporary main market. The Lae Metro Command has been engaged to keep the temporary bus stop and the market perimeter clear of street sales.
LCA thanks the people of Lae and Morobe for their patience during this transition and trusts that vendors and the general public will enjoy the new facility, looking forward to its opening on 27 May 2024.
