20MW boost for Lae — Yalu Solar launches and Taraka generators online

Friday 6 January 2026 saw two major energy projects go live in Lae — the Yalu Solar Farm Project was launched and eight new power generators were commissioned at Taraka Power Station, together injecting 20 megawatts of additional electricity into Lae's grid.

The combined K120 million investment, made through Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited, will deliver:

  • Taraka: 8 × 1.25MW generators = 10MW firm capacity, operational now
  • Yalu Solar: 10MW renewable + 20MW storage backup, 12-month build

Lae's electricity demand currently stands at around 80MW. Work on Yonki (Ramu 2) will commence next.
