The Amelia Earhart Memorial is located along Markham Road heading towards the Huon Gulf; it sits just past the roundabout to Top Town, on the left hand side.
Amelia Earhart was an American aviation pioneer and the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for this record.
During an attempt to make a circumnavigation flight of the globe in 1937 in a Purdue-funded Lockheed Model 10 Electra, Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island.
Her final flight to complete this journey departed from Lae on July 2, 1937. Today a memorial marks that flight and the disappearance of the pilot.
