The Buimo Rehabilitation Program was launched earlier this year by Lae MP John Rosso, LCA Chairman & Lae City Lord Mayor James Khay, and LCA CEO Neil Ellery where they handed over equipment, tools and a dump truck to Buimo Correctional Services. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the programme was halted and finally commenced in June 2020.

The program sees low risk inmates from the Buimo CS facility in Lae perform various cleaning services in the city.

A minimum of 20 inmates are part of this partnership program between the LCA and PNG Correctional Services to clean up and beautify the city. More low risk inmates will be engaged in the coming months to clean up around the city.

Under its prison rehabilitation program, a small portion of payment by LCA to the Buimo CS will be paid to participating low risk prisoners to assist them get back on their feet when they complete their sentences and re-enter the community. The idea behind this is it endeavours to prevent discharged inmates from reoffending.

The program is finally off the ground and running, with constant support from LCA and MP John Rosso and more support will be announced in the near future.
