Since the introduction of the Sector Response Unit (SRU) in Lae City, the speed at which criminals are arrested has risen dramatically. With the installation of a call centre and Police Toll Free phone number 70903300, Police response time has been cut from an average of 20 minutes to 5 minutes. This is a big step to ensuring a safer Lae.

The Lae City Authority together with its partners and stakeholders so far have built three brand new police stations and purchased up to 16 vehicles for police in just under 3 years. All these outcomes came through strong partnerships under the leadership of Lae MP, Hon. John Rosso.

The CCTV Project is another milestone project that is producing positive results, through the support of key stakeholders working together to combat and reduce major and minor crimes in Lae City. Led by the Police in Lae and supported by LCA through Lae MP, the project embarked on setting up Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the Market, Town, and Eriku areas in efforts to curb crime in these busy areas.

Lae Police Metropolitan Superintendent Chris Kunyanban is committed to get CCTV installed in more areas. With the installation of CCTV cameras at main market, Top Town and Eriku, and the impact of the SRU, has meant that the crime rate in Lae has been reduced by an incredible 80%.
