The Lae City Authority is primarily responsible for providing municipal services in the Lae area in accordance with the Lae City Authority Act 2015.
Lae is the capital of Morobe Province and Papua New Guinea’s second largest city, with a population of more than 200,000. Located on the Huon Gulf between the Markham and Busu rivers, Lae is perfectly positioned as PNG’s industrial hub.
It boasts the country’s largest cargo port and the starting point of the Highlands Highway, the only road link to the Highlands region. Up to 70% of all PNG’s trade passes through Lae, including almost all coffee exports. Nadzab Airport is a 40-minute drive from the centre of town.
Lae supports a wide range of diverse and flourishing industries including manufacturing, agribusiness, academia, tourism, mining and resources, construction, health and fisheries.
It’s home to the University of Technology (UniTech), the National Botanic Gardens, Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium, ANGAU Memorial General Hospital and the best fresh food market in PNG. It was the landing and departure for the first American aviator Amelia Earhart and her Navigator Fred Noonan
The city experiences an extraordinary amount of precipitation, averaging 4,500 millimetres of rainfall annually.
